Earlier this month, I had the incredible opportunity to join ISPO, the world’s leading sports industry expo, in Munich. With this year’s inspiring motto—Stay connected. Stay inspired. Love every contact—it’s no surprise that the event felt more like a vibrant, educational congress than ever before. Seasoned ISPO attendees even mentioned how the shift toward deeper learning and idea-sharing stood out this year.
Spanning three action-packed days, ISPO 2024 brought together sports enthusiasts, top brands, and thought leaders for a whirlwind of keynotes, panel discussions, and product demonstrations. The atmosphere was electric, and the insights shared were invaluable.
6 Key Themes Shaping the Future of Sports eCommerce
Here are six powerful trends I observed that are shaping the future of sports and eCommerce:
1. Communities as the Heart of Sports
Sports communities are more than just groups—they’re lifelines for connection and social interaction. Whether it’s pickleball, padel, or other rising sports, people are rallying around shared passions to build vibrant, supportive networks.
2. Sustainability is Non-Negotiable
Today’s customers demand products that last, can be repaired, and have minimal environmental impact. Circularity and low CO2 footprints are no longer “nice-to-haves”—they’re must-haves.
3. Sports for Longevity
Staying active is becoming synonymous with living a long and healthy life. From new fitness trends to innovations tailored for older demographics, the focus on “longevity through movement” is stronger than ever.
4. The Rise of Home Fitness
Compact, tech-savvy equipment and gamified workout experiences are redefining how we stay fit at home. It’s a booming sector that keeps evolving.
5. Adventure Sports Go Mainstream
The pandemic’s push toward the outdoors sparked a mass movement. Athletes like Jonas Deichmann inspire millions to embrace adventure sports, making them more accessible and aspirational.

From optimizing athletic performance to enhancing tracking devices and health monitoring, AI is transforming how athletes train and recover. Its practical applications are making waves across the industry.
Sharing Jack Wolfskin’s Spirit at ISPO
One of my favorite moments was witnessing my colleagues, Jutta Stienen and Tonio Meier, take the stage alongside Stephan Buschmann, Director of Customer Service B2C & B2B at Jack Wolfskin. Together, they delivered an electric session on the transformative power of community-driven eCommerce.
Stephan brought Jack Wolfskin’s legacy to life, describing how its origins—campfire stories shared among outdoor enthusiasts—are now seamlessly integrated into their online store. Through the Community Advice Solution, Jack Wolfskin enables real-time conversations between experienced outdoor lovers and shoppers seeking trusted advice for conversations as meaningful, personal and as relatable as campfire chats.
The insights Stephan shared were both practical and heartfelt, showcasing how Jack Wolfskin’s passionate community members create meaningful and credible brand experiences by sharing their personal product knowledge with like-minded adventurers.
The audience’s response was exciting as well. It was clear that the idea of connecting with fellow enthusiasts resonated deeply, especially at ISPO—a space where sports-loving brands and individuals come together to exchange ideas, share their passions, and celebrate community.
This isn’t just a strategy; it’s a testament to the power of authenticity in building eCommerce experiences. Seeing how this approach resonated reaffirmed for me that genuine human connections are the key to thriving in digital spaces.
Networking and Innovation
The energy didn’t stop on the stage. During the evening networking events, I had the chance to connect with incredible individuals who share a passion for sports, the outdoors, and nature.
Together with my colleague, Jörg Evers, I met so many passionate people whose creativity and innovative ideas left a lasting impression. From exchanging ideas to trying out some of the coolest new products, these connections has left me with a deep appreciation for ISPO and the community it brings together.
